Belogradchik is situated about 170 km North-West from Sofia (E-79). The unique Belogradchik rocks are among the most beautiful natural landmarks in Bulgaria. Their fantastic outlines - human and enimals figures, castles - seems to introduce us in a magic world. Situated in a 90 sq.km. surface, some of the rocks reach up to 100 m.The Town Museum of History is arranged in the Revival house of the Panovs’ (1810), which in itself is an architectural monument. The Astronomical Observatory has one of the most powerful telescopes in Bulgaria. St. Georgi the Victorious Church was built in 1868.Near the town Belogradchik is the very famous, historic fortress Belogradchik Kaleto, dating from the Third Century as a Roman fortification, and later as a Bulgarian medieval fortress. Never mind that 171 years have past, now the \"Fortress\" looks just like in 1837, when it was finished. Another natural and historical landmark is the famous Magura Cave, near the village of Rabisha. There are approximately 30 other caves in the area. The morphology of the Magura Cave includes one main gallery with six various sized halls and three lateral galleries. The cave includes impressive stalagmites and stalactites, and is inhabited by the springtail as well as four species of bats. The Magura Cave is best known for its unique prehistoric cave paintings of religious and hunting scenes, including a solar calendar, that date to the Epipaleolithic to early Bronze Age.
